Newsletters

Types of SaladSide salad was the name of a newsletter designed to discuss various matters and included contributions from outside sources.

A newsletter can be defined as something that is distributed to the reader on a regular basis. It offers people of a shared interest the chance to read and share current ideas and news about a chosen field or hobby that they may be interested in. Most people that get a newsletter will subscribe to that letter.

It is usual for organisations and clubs such as churches, clubs and societies (I.e. sporting) to run a newsletter. In it there will usually be factual articles about the subject as well as letters from members, quizzes, competition and raffles for example.

A newspaper is also a form of written communication but has a less 'familiar' context as it isn't written for a particular audience, rather from public reading. A newspaper will contain news, advertising and other information. It can be local, national, daily or weekly. Most newspapers print other information including sporting news, society and entertainment type articles and they are printed on a special type of paper called newsprint which is low cost compared to normal paper - more practical if it is printed on a daily basis!

The career of writing for a newspaper or magazine is called journalism, and those who work in this field are called journalists. It is possible to study journalism at degree level at university or some people may 'work their way up' in the industry. However, it is a very competitive field to get into and those that are successful or write for national and well known publications are very few.

A magazine is another means of circulating information. They are similar to newsletters in that they are likely to be about a particular subject and will be bought by a audience who enjoy that subject. They are generally funded by advertising and run adverts within the magazine. Most magazines are published on a monthly basis, though this could be weekly or more infrequently than this.
